Don’t Drown Your Green Friends: The Art of Watering

Watering is the number one area where new plant parents struggle. A strict watering schedule (like “every Sunday”) rarely works because a plant’s thirst changes based on the season, humidity, and room temperature.

The “Finger Test” Method

Before you water, always check the soil. Stick your index finger about 2 inches into the dirt. If it feels moist, leave the plant alone. If it feels completely dry, it is time for a drink.

Plant Watering Troubleshooting

SymptomLikely CauseBest Solution
Yellowing, mushy leaves at the baseOverwateringStop watering immediately. Let the soil dry out completely and check the drainage hole.
Crispy, brown leaf edgesUnderwatering or low humiditySoak the soil thoroughly. Consider misting the leaves or getting a small humidifier.
Tiny flies buzzing around the soilPersistently wet topsoil (Fungus Gnats)Try “bottom-watering” to keep the top layer of soil dry, which prevents gnats from laying eggs.

Always ensure your plant pots have drainage holes at the bottom. Sitting in a puddle of water will cause root rot, which is fatal to most houseplants.
